Signs Your Switchboard Needs an Upgrade

Signs Your Switchboard Needs an Upgrade

Your switchboard is the heart of your home's electrical system. It controls every circuit in your property, from your lights and power points to your air conditioning and appliances. When it starts to fail, it can cause anything from minor inconveniences to serious safety hazards.

Here are the key signs your switchboard needs an upgrade, and why you shouldn't ignore them.

1. Your Switchboard Still Has Ceramic Fuses

If your home was built before the 1980s, there's a good chance it still has the original ceramic or porcelain fuse box. These older systems weren't designed to handle the electrical demands of modern homes, think multiple air conditioners, EV chargers, home offices and smart appliances all running at once.

Ceramic fuse boards also don't have safety switches, which are now required by law in Queensland for new installations. If yours doesn't have one, it's time to upgrade.

2. Flickering or Dimming Lights

If your lights flicker or dim when you turn on an appliance like the microwave or washing machine, it's a sign your circuits are being overloaded. This puts strain on your wiring and switchboard and can cause damage over time.

3. Circuit Breakers That Keep Tripping

The occasional tripped breaker is normal. But if you're constantly resetting the same breaker, it's telling you something, either that circuit is overloaded, or there's a fault somewhere in the system.

Repeatedly resetting a tripping breaker without investigating the cause is a fire risk.

4. Burning Smell or Scorch Marks

This one is serious. If you notice a burning smell near your switchboard, or you can see scorch marks or discolouration around the board or any power points, turn off your power at the mains and call a licensed electrician immediately.

This is a sign of overheating or arcing, both of which can cause electrical fires.

5. You're Adding Solar, an EV Charger or Air Conditioning

Adding high demand systems to your home often requires a switchboard upgrade first. Solar inverters, EV charging stations and ducted air conditioning all need dedicated circuits and adequate capacity at the board.

If you're planning any of these upgrades, get your switchboard assessed first. It could save you time and money down the track.

6. Your Home Has Had Multiple Owners or Renovations

DIY electrical work or unlicensed renovations can leave a switchboard in a dangerous state. If you've bought an older property or one that's had a lot of work done over the years, it's worth having a licensed electrician inspect the board to make sure everything is safe and compliant.

7. You Don't Have a Safety Switch

In Queensland, safety switches are mandatory on power and lighting circuits in all new installations. A safety switch monitors electrical current and shuts the circuit off within milliseconds if it detects a fault, protecting you from electrocution.

If your switchboard doesn't have safety switches installed, this is one of the most important upgrades you can make for your family's safety.

How Much Does a Switchboard Upgrade Cost in Queensland?

As a general guide:

  • Basic safety switch installation: $200 – $400
  • Partial switchboard upgrade: $800 – $1,500
  • Full switchboard replacement: $1,500 – $3,500+

The final cost depends on the size of your home, the age of your existing board and what circuits need to be added or replaced. The best way to get an accurate price is to have a licensed electrician inspect your board and provide a quote.
